My laptop broke a few weeks ago, I need to get a new one. I'm in art college and will probably be doing graphics after Christmas so I'm thinking about getting a mac, which one would be best? I was told to get a external graphics card, what exactly is it?

You should go to a local Apple store to look at the various models. Apple notebooks all have internal graphics cards (the graphics card is what translates the bits and bytes of data to the display screen so you can see it) ... offhand I don't know any notebook with an external graphics card, although maybe there are some that can optionally use one.
