iMessage on Mac OS x won't connect to my Yahoo Messenger account

iMessage worked fine with my Yahoo Messenger account until about a week ago. Since then, iMessage says "Messages can’t log in to xxxxx@yahoo.com because your login ID or password is incorrect. " The ID/PW I enter works fine in the Yahoo Messenger application, so I know the password is fine.

I deleted the Yahoo account in iMessage and re-added it, but no luck.

Any Ideas?

Hi,

Yep, that is because now there is another issue now.

Yahoo stopped the original Messenger app and server and created a whole new set up.

This new one is not compatible with the old one and the Plug-in in Messages points to the wrong server.

It seems the new yahoo Messenger system is web based at the moment with unclear info from Yahoo if they will create PC or Mac based apps.

Me too. This is so frustrating because I cannot send text messages on my Mac to anyone EXCEPT apple users. This *****!!!! Prior to updating to the new software it worked JUST fine. Now NOTHING!! Angry is an understatement. This is sooooo not what I am used to from Apple. When I first installed iOs10 to my phone it LOCKED and crashed. I was on the phone with tech support for a ridiculous amount of time. They finally got me up and running but that was AFTER hours of trying everything under the sun. In the process I still lost some of my contacts which were supposed to be stored in the cloud. Now THIS! Way too much to ask us to endure.

Hi,

Note this page

https://messenger.yahoo.com/#home

Note the Mac App version number (it has not even got to Version 1 yet meaning it is effectively in Beta)

The previous Yahoo app only got the "Beta 3 for Mac" before it was effectively withdrawn by Yahoo back in Yosemite (2 OS versions ago).

Yahoo are the ones that had the Security breach in 2014 but have not told us until now.

Yahoo are the ones that have totally changed their Messenger so that the Old app on PCs or Macs will not join the process. (the server name has changed).

The issue(s) i.e. the cause and the possible why behind that - are Yahoo's

Ranting here will not change that.

I've been doing some additional digging and found the following:

1) Application specific passwords from Yahoo require enabling 2 Factor Authentication on Yahoo

2) Accounts that were merged long ago with ATT Mail (as mine was) are managed (passwords) through ATT and not Yahoo

3) ATT/Yahoo accounts do not and haven't ever had 2 Factor Authentication turned on

So it seems like a Catch-22. You can't turn on what you need to generate the password specific to the Messages Application on the Mac now.

Hi,

For the Yahoo account the Messages app and iChat 6 before that never had the Server Setting tab that AIM and Jabber account do (AIM ones also get the Privacy tab).

There is no option in System Preferences > Internet Account for settings.

It is just a place to turn Accounts On or Off. The connection set up is handed to the app to complete.
