My MacBook turns on fine, then the screen projects only black. When I try to reset my computer in Safe Mode, it does not complete loading, and skips it entirely.

My MacBook turns on fine, then the screen projects only black. When I try to reset my computer in Safe Mode, it does not complete loading, and skips it entirely. When it's running, I can change the volume keys, screen brightness, and I can even power it off by pressing the power button and then Return. Earlier I did a reset with Safe Mode and it worked fine then. I turned it off and then on again, and it worked fine. The next day the problem returned and Safe Mode restart wouldn't work. Any other suggestions I could try?

MacBook (13-inch Mid 2007), Mac OS X (10.6.7), I can't be sure of the current OS
