finder sidebar preferences

I recently installed Mountain Lion. It's working quite well, but this morning the icons in the finder sidebar disappeared and in the finder preferences window it will not let me select any favorites (but I can select "shared" and "devices".

I think the icons in the finder sidebar where gone when I fist turned on the computer. Any solution?

Thank you.

The problem disappeared as mysteriously as it first appeared. Restarting the computer didn't help but two days later a list of favorites re-appeared in the finder sidebar as well as the ability to select and deselect them in the preferences of the finder menu. None of this affected the "shared" and "devices" in the sidebar. Go figure.
