macbook air superdrive versus apple usb superdrive

A friend with a Macbook Air Superdrive wants to know if it will work with new Mac Mini or new iMacs. It is hard to find out what the difference is, if any, between the Macbook Air Superdrive that she bought a few years ago and the current Apple USB Superdrive, which everyone agrees will work with the new Mac Minis and iMacs. Both are external drives.
