My mac won't log in with the correct password. It comes to a white screen as though it is going to log in but then returns to the login page. Help please?!

If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
How do I know what disk to repair from the list on the left? Thanks for all the help!

The Disk Utility couldnt be repaired and it says, "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired after 3 attempts." Was just wondering if there was any other advice you could give me before I resort to taking it to the Apple Genius bar? Thanks for everything!

Your next stop is the Apple Genius bar, it appears your HD has failed. Hopefully you have been backing up using Time Machine or creating a bootable clone. If you have then make sure you take these with you. If you have not been backing up then you are about to learn a painful lesson on why backup isn't recommended it's critical!!
