Can you use imessage on airplane mode?
iPhone 4, iOS 6.0.1
This is how I understand it when using an iPhone:
1. If Airplane Mode in ON (doesn't matter if you're actually on a plane or not), it disables ALL radio transmissions of the phone (Cellular, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi).
2. However, you can go back into Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, separately, and turn one or both of them on and it won't affect the Airplane Mode, it'll still be on the ON position and your Cellular status is still disabled. To see what I mean, go into Settings> General> Cellular, do you notice that Cellular is Grayed out? That means it's disabled.
3. If you intend to ONLY use Wi-Fi and not make or receive any calls using Cellular, then turning ON Airplane Mode is what you need to do.
4. With that said, turning OFF Airplane Mode will enable your Cellular capability. This will give you the ability to modify Celluar Data, Enable 3G or LTE, and Data Roaming options. Now, by turning OFF Cellular Data, this will restrict all data to Wi-Fi (of course, you need to be connected to Wi-Fi service to send/receive data) AND it will also turn OFF Data Roaming (you won't see Data Roaming showing as option anymore). As a result, you now only have Enable 3G as an option showing. This will only allow you to make/receive calls and not allow you to use data using Cellular 3G or LTE service.
Hi I understand how wifi, 3G/4G, & airplane mode work very well. Well recently I've been putting my phone in airplane mode then turning on wifi and iMessage has been working perfectly fine with my iPhone 4S on AT&T. It wasn't until just recently about a week ago that now it doesn't work. When my phone is in airplane mode but connected to a wifi network, all other apps work perfectly fine but iMessage won't send/receive any messages. When I turn off airplane mode, but still connected to wifi, iMessage works again. I don't understand why it used to work before now it doesn't. Would you know a solution or do you think apple stopped letting people text with their phone number on airplane mode but on wifi?
Basically,
Airplane mode + wifi = iMessage doesn't work but it used to
Airplane mode off with or without wifi - iMessage works
& my account with AT&T is up and running, it's not suspended or anything. The reason why I put my phone in airplane mode is because my mom has a tracker on my phone via AT&T family map. She can't track me using airplane mode so I would use iMessage over wifi. Sounds funny I know, If you know a solution it would e much appreciated thanks.
Then yes
No, iMessage uses WiFi (or 3G) airplane mode switches wifi off as standard also
You can however re-enable wifi manually and IF there is wifi provided onboard the plane - then yes, you can 😉
Not presently. In Airplane Mode there is no wireless unless you are on a flight that has wireless service available.
What if I'm connected to wifi?
Can you not read?

Ok thanks. No need to emphasize it again.
