HP Laserjet 1600 printer needs current driver to print on OS X 10.8. Where can I find the right driver?

My HP Laserjet 1600 printer will not print on my new OS X 10.8. Macbook Pro laptop. Mac sees the printer in the "Add Printer" window but then gives the message, "Software for this printer isn't available from Apple. Contact the printer's manufacture for the latest software." I did but HP's website says that the software is available from Apple! Is this printer compatible with OS X10.8 or do I have to buy a new printer? I am not on a network and use a USB cable to communicate with the printer. This printer worked fine with my old Windows 7 PC. I'm a new Mac user. Thanks.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

Products not supported

The following products are not supported in Mac OS X including the Mountain Lion operating system:

  • ...
  • HP Color LaserJet 1500 and 1600 Printer series
  • ...

I recommend you purchase a printer from a company that visibly supports OS X. HP is not among them.

Lately, almost anything except HP. I have been using Brother printers for the past three years or so and have been very pleased with them.

If you want color laser here is their selection:

You mentioned that you use USB but a wirelessly networked printer is a luxury you will wonder how you ever lived without. The feature has become very inexpensive. The price difference between USB and wireless printers has become insignificantly small.

If you need AirPrint capability or if you anticipate ever needing it, make sure the printer specifically indicates that because wireless alone does not mean it is capable of AirPrint.

Other manufacturers to consider are Canon and Epson, in that order. Avoid Dell and Kodak.
