downgraded from lion to snow leopard and ex hard drive is not compatable

i have recently got rid of lion (with loads of issues) only to get another one i saved all the stuff i wanted onto my external hard drive so i could get it back once the downgrade had completed but now its telling me that the format of the hard drive is 'incomplete format' so i cant get anything off it, help pleeeeease
