no longer able to sync iphone with iTunes

No longer see iTunes with the ability to sync iPhone to iTunes. Where are new instructions? 13 Dec 2012
iPhone is currenly backing up to iCloud which could take 17 hours. Can't navigate setting to verify IOS.

iPhone 3GS, iOS 6.0.1, what other details are needed?
