Getting old purchased songs purchased from iTunes

I just got a new computer after my old one crashed. How do I get the itunes I purchased and were downloaded onto the old computer? I no longer have my old computer, but I always thought that iTunes automatically restored my purchased songs to iTunes, regardless of the computer it was on.
