Ical is not showing all entries - can I reinstall from Time Machine

For some reason ical on my Mac, and thus on my iphone4, has lost the majority of entries, historical and in the future. If I wanted to apply a previous back up from my Time machine, can it be done? If so, how do I do it? Where is the backup data held on Time Machine, for ical entries?
