OSX is killing my computer!

I recently (Tuesday) updated my OS to the most recent version of Mountain Lion. Now System Preferences is crashing, my computer is running very, very slowly, and Time Machine won't (can't?) perform its back up. What is going on? How can I fix it? Do I need to restore to before I updated the OS?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

You probably have a corrupt download. OS X is extremely stable however what cannot be controlled is your download. A download is only as good as the connection you have and the reliablity of your ISP. In your case I would recommend a re-download of ML from the App Store and reinstalling.

Assuming you followed Apple's instructions regarding backing up prior to downloading restoring your data should be simple to do.
