I keep deleting massive files
More details would help
but the programs don't show any freed up space (like in disk utility). If I do a cmd-i on the Macintosh Hard drive it shows 300+ gb, but disk utility is 70+gigabytes. FCP X shows the smaller amount. I've run the disc utility. It says everything is fine.
Download and install OmniDiskSweeper. It will tell you the files and folders that using the most disk space.

Nice little utility, thanks. I've already identified the big files and deleted them but my hard drive space is still limited.
You are emptying the Trash?
Allan
Yes. It shows it is empty.
Click on the HDD icon on the desktop COMMAND I (the letter i). What does it say about the disk space used?

“You may notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. This is expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed."
