Not with phone now, not sure which iOS version I have, but since I have installed the new YouTube app on iPhone 4, how do I remove the old one, no X appears in corner when trying to remove it the traditional way?

If you update your phone it will disappear, that's the only way.
The YouTube app that comes with your iPhone on iOS 5.1.1 and below, is standard to the phone, and cant be deleted (just like the Calender or Map app).

That's why the OP needs to update his phone to 6.0 and it will disappear on it's own.
