Indeed, hardware-wise, MacBook Air's are not upgradable, so if you buy a MacBook Air and you want it to last throughour college, you had better choose the maximum configuration at the Apple Online Store. But the traditional non-Retina MacBook Pro's can be easily upgraded anytime you want, so you can buy a cheap model now and upgrade the parts as they become cheaper later.

Apple is quite good at this lol.

I mean I am buying a new laptop at the moment and I configured a 13" MBA with the specs I want and saw it was the same price as the base retina 13" model which was just as powerful and only slightly heavier.

So I thought "hmm Ok I'll look at that" and decided to configure it with the i7 processor and 256GB of storage...

Wait...I can get a 15" retina model for the same price as this! It has the same storage, descrete graphics, and a better processor...

Hmm, I can bump the processor up to 2.6Ghz for a minimal price, yea, let's do that.

And 16GB of RAM...can't go wrong, I mean I won't be able to upgrade in future.

My $1700 MacBook Air suddenly becomes a $4500 MacBook Pro retina lol.

edit: UK prices if you were confused, we dont get it cheap like you Americans do

I think for the uses you described the 13" Air with upgraded processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB storage if you need it is good.

I use a 2011 MacBook Air 13" as my main computer and it's not upgraded it's just 4GB RAM and 1.7 i5 processor, and it does what I need to perfectly and I can game on it as well. The 2012 MBA with Intel 4000 (mine is 3000) and the other upgrades would probably exceed mine by another 50% or more.

🙂

Hi there. I too am a student. I bought a refurb through apple to save a few bucks. There is no way I could tell this is a refurb and I am glad to have a few more bucks in my pocket. I got a MacBook Air with 1.7 Ghz Intel i5/ 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and 250 GB of storage for ~1300$. Love it and would do it again in a heartbeat.

My computer is my right and left arm for research and this little charmer has been the best.
