Audio input, Macbook

Hoping to connect a microphone to my old Macbook, but realize that the mike presumably needs a USB connection. Can one but a standardjack-to-USB adapter cord?

Most MacBooks have built-in audio-in, but it is line-level, meaning it needs amplification. There is also a built-in omnidirectional microphone right next to the camera above the screen. If neither of those is good quality enough, yes, you can buy a USB microphone, but make sure it doesn't require any special drivers for the Mac operating system you are using. Most HID supporting devices have no trouble with Apple's built-in USB support.
