iPod recognized in Explorer, erronously recognized by Updater and more...

I know there's seems to be a surge in connection problems lately and I have tried numerous solutions offered by apple support and discussion boards but to no avail. I have a new 60Gig iPod I received this week after my old one's hard drive failed.

Here's a short and concise list of the symptoms I've been experiencing when using my iPod with my USB 2.0 PCI card:

1. iPod is recognized as a USB Mass Storage Device by Explorer

2. When Updater 2006-03-23 eventually "detects" the iPod it sees it as this:

Name: N/A
Serial Number: N/A
Software Version: N/A
Capacity: N/A

3. When I run the Restore I get one of two error messages:

- "Can't Mount iPod"
or
- "Formatting Failure, disk write error"

I used to run my old iPod on my computer's USB 1.1 card. I was told this can lead to problems so while I waited for my new iPod to arrive I purchased a new USB 2.0 PCI card which works fine with all my other devices (camera, controller, memory stick). HOWEVER, and I believe this will help in finding a solution, both Explorer and Updater and iTunes recognizes the iPod when I use it with USB 1.1.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Updater, iTunes and all USB drivers but the problems persist. There must be a problem with the drivers or something similar because I was able to successfully Restore my iPod on my brother's computer and be detected by iTunes, yet it still was not recognized by iTunes back on MY computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I figured as much, its an IOGEAR High speed 2-port USB 2.0 PCI Card model GIC22OUW1

Its compatible for both mac and PC and I've problems with devices like that never performing well on either kind of machine, I'm going to return it to the store and get a better quality one from the apple suggestion list and hope it solves the problem.

I'll report back.
