17 inch MacBook Pro Airflow?

I have a MacBook pro, and do a lot of video rendering, does anyone here know the AIRFLOW through the laptop where does the air come in and where does the air exit. I want to properly place an external fan to assist in cooling the laptop after long periods of video rendering. I'm assuming the air exits at the black bar below the title on the screen, but air entry? Keyboard? The back?

There are visible air vents on the computer case and a large vent out below the screen. The best thing you can do is to elevate the rear about one inch to assure good ventilation. Do not use the computer except on a hard flat surface like a desk. Operate the computer in a room temp environment - 68-75Âș F. If you want to use fan cooling then purchase a cooling pad with fan(s).

Have never owned a 17"er, but unless there are vents along the sides of the case, air enters and leaves thru the rear vent, like my 15". A common misconception is that these Macs draw air thru the speaker grilles or the keyboard: not true.

Can also peruse the pics in IFixIt.com DIY section, choosing your model, so you can see how things are set up inside. Try for example the fan replacement guide.

It exhausts from the rear under the hinge, having the machine elevated (2 srips of wood or the about an inch or so high and wide) to raise it off a flat surface to allow air flow under it should help. A small fan blowing thru there should help disapate the heat. I made one from a laptop tray for my kids, as he does a lot of video stuff and it was getting quite warm. I beleive there are some commercially available cooling trays out there as well. Hope this helps. All the best
