i movie 11 - using external microphone for recording voiceover, and all indications show it is recording - but cannot get sound to play once recording is completed. Suggestions?

Using iMovie 11 and an external microphone for recording a voiceover. Playing it back, despite changing various settings, I get no sound coming from the voiceover. Suggestions are most welcome. Thank you!
