download accelerator for OSX10.4.1 ??

Need to download files a lot faster from internet as it is taking forever. Found Speed Download for Mac but then saw it was for system OS X 10.4.6 or later, which presumably won't work.

As I have OS X 10.4.1 is there a good download that you know about? Preferably freeware, but anything that will speed things up as I'm trying to download Quicktime and it says 4.5 hours !!!! I would have thought all these things would already be loaded on when I bought eMac, but obviously not.

So any recommended download accelerators that are compatible with my system would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Quicktime and other system software are already installed, but the updates have to be downloaded. I don't know if ou have uploads set to automatically download, which you may want to disable on a dial-up connection (go to System Preferences> Quicktime and System preferences> Sotware Update).

Since beyond Quicktime you presumablly want the Combo 10.4.6 Updater for PPC, maybe the latest iTunes, the Jave engine update, et al., it may be quicker to instead try this:

--- use Software Update and note what programs it's suggesting

--- look up the address of the nearest Apple Store (the Apple Store website shows two in London, Brent Street and Regent Street)

--- take a blank CD-R or two to the Store's Genius Bar

--- do to the Apple Downloads website and download the software installers and updaters onto the CD-R

--- burn the CD-R, thank the staff, and take the discs home

(At 4.5 hours just to download Quicktime, that should save you a fair bit of time.)

Lobella:

It sounds like you are using dialup, the best way to speed up downloads is by using a broadband connection.

That said, I used to use an accelerator from fastermac.net, it was very good and loaded PAGES fast but will not help for downloads. Fastermac's service and support was very good also, and geared towards Macs.

Because of the nature of graphics on the web, it is possible to speed up the loading of pages for display (by making graphics files smaller and therefore less detailed(,but there is really no way to accelerate downloads except to have a faster connection.

Lobelia,

You can use Speed Download 3.0.20 found here:

http://www.yazsoft.com/files/sd3020.zip

Version 3.0.20 of Speed Download is optimized for the version of Mac OS X that you are currently running. (Mac OS X 10.4.1)

Note: you can update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 for free. Simply download the update from the Apple Support site here:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1046comboforppc.html

(you can use Speed Download 3.0.20 to download it since it supports auto-resuming should something go wrong with your connection)

Or run the 'Software Update' from under the Apple menu in your Finder.

Once you have updated to Mac OS X 10.4.6, you can then update to the recently released Speed Download 4 found here:

http://www.yazsoft.com/download.html

If you need any more help, please email us directly at info@yazsoft.com

Kind regards,

Johnny

Thanks for all your suggestions User uploaded file Seems like I'll eventually need broadband - just didn't want an external modem, or to have current service disrupted during change-over, or maybe I just have an impression (unfounded) that it will not be straightforward.
I thought that I couldn't just download Mac OSX 10.4.6 as I looked into that earlier, but I'll certainly explore all these helpful links you have given me.
Thanks for all your help everyone.
