You can still buy the iLife '11 suite on Amazon (and various other sites) and it includes iDVD. There is still support for iDVD, as a matter of fact, in the latest release of iMovie.

Who knows why Apple discontinued it? It's a great piece of software and we're lucky that it can still be had for a relatively modest price. I do wish it was still supported and updated, however. The 'latest' release that I have is 7.1.2, updated in November of 2011.

Apple has been moving steadily away from optical media for years, and others in the industry are starting to follow them. Give it 5 years and many/most new computers won't have optical drives. Give it 10 years and the DVD player you've got hooked up to your TV now will be a relic like a VCR is today.

That said, if you need to burn videos to DVD today, Clinton's reply has you covered. 🙂 But you can also just export a movie to something like an mp4 file and put it on a flash drive or SD card, and most modern TVs can display the video right from that device without the need for any kind of external player.

If this matters so much to you that it is not worth spending an additional $40 for iDVD then return your Mac. You have fourteen days to return it for a complete refund. Explain that you are returning it because it because it did not include iDVD.

This would be a far more productive use of your time than to complain of its omission in several posts. Apple decided to discontinue iDVD and no one here can do anything about it. Knowing the reason for their decision, even if someone did, would not help you.

Apple is the largest media company in the world. They sell nothing on disk. It is to their financial advantage to have the physical possession of movies go away. (I am not participating in this.)

You CAN have iDVD.

IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.
