Mouse problems - Half dead?

I have a 1.33GHz PowerBook G4 and have been using the Apple Bluetooth Mouse for the last year and a half or so without any problems. Today, I changed the batteries and the mouse is acting funny: The light is on, I can click, but I can't move the cursor. I've tried different batteries, relinking the mouse, restarting, and am out of ideas. Any suggestions? Am I just out another 60 bucks?

Thanks for the response, Barry, and the welcome.

No luck, unfortunately. The mouse looks like it's functioning fine: the light is on, blinking when I lift it and solid on a surface (I've tried several just in case my mousepad was all of a sudden not acceptable). I can click wherever the mouse is, to open a menu or select something, just can't move the cursor.

Hi, Natron and Barry —

Natron, please accept another warm welcome to Apple Discussions.

Please review, consider, and try out the suggestions in these two recent threads about what I think are similar issues:

xsam's "mouse issues"

Doug Chalmers' "Wireless mouse not tracking "

Then post back to discuss your progress... If the problem still needs troubleshooting, please include your software and firmware versions as reported in System Profiler »» Hardware »» Bluetooth (with Views set to Full Profile). Thanks, and good luck.

Cheerfully,
Dean

Hi Dean,

Thanks very much for the advice. I installed several sets of batteries, tried white paper, etc. and finally looked closely at the contacts. The positive contacts each had a small smudge, like the tip of a pencil had touched it. I wiped this off and reinstalled the batteries... poof! It's back to normal working order. Thanks very much to both you and Barry for the help.
