Cannot See Nano in Device Manager, ITunes or Ipod Updater

Help! I purchased a new Nano 3 weeks ago and I have been struggling with it ever since. I had it working very briefly, with some songs loaded. However, I then applied the lastest update (03-23) and my nano hasn't worked since. I've tried everything. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. The Nano does not show up in Windows Device Manager, and it does not show up in Itunes or in ipod Updater. In all the postings I've read with suggested solutions the nano was at least showing up SOMEWHERE. Mine doesn't show up in any of the three places. The songs I had loaded onto the Ipod disappeared, although they still show on my computer in ITunes. I have 2 USB 2.0 ports, and I've tried switching between those, but that still doesn't work. I am able to plug my Palm into either of the 2 ports and do a Hotsync, so I know the ports themselves do work. One post suggested putting the nano into disk mode before opening up the ipod updater. I have tried and tried to get my nano into disk mode and I can't get it to do that. The Apple logo comes up, I try to press Select and Play/Pause but it just comes up with the language selection list. I click on "English" and it brings up the regular menu. I do remember my computer restarting with the Nano still connected when I was working on this problem early on. Could that have damaged something or reset something? I've spent hours and hours over the past couple weeks on this problem and I'm truly stumped. Can anyone help? At this point I don't know what else to do except take it back to Best Buy. Thank you in advance to anyone who can advise.

Had also the same problem. I've spent 4 days to understand what could have been wrong with my PC. Fortunatelly, I've found this post and the solution provided by Gailpod before having crashed it and my iPod nano !

Thanks Gailpod. You are the one that has been able to find out my problem and to provide the solution.

These problems dont seem to be just affected by the latest updater, i have the same symptoms but i have been still using the 01-10 version, it works fine for my ipod video but my sis recently got a nano and it has stopped updating, it still charges, 3 days after we first used it. my video works fine its just the nano!

Thanks to luckyone for posting the link to the HP USB tool. I followed Gailpod's instructions but unfortunately the USB tool doesn't work for me. I downloaded and installed the tool. I connected my ipod and FINALLY managed to get it into Disk mode. (I discovered that I had been waiting to long to press Select and Play/Pause. I was waiting for the Apple logo to come up on a bright screen, and it comes up on a greyed out/dark screen. As soon as I saw it on the dark screen I pressed Select and Play/Pause and I now have the big checkmark, also on a dark screen. I didn't expect the screen to be dark, but at least I can see the checkmark, so this appears to me to be disk mode.)

I ran the USB tool by doubleclicking on the USB tool icon now on my desktop. As someone mentioned everything shows up grey. I clicked on "Start" and it says "Checking the device" then hangs up indefinitely.

I tried going into Windows Explorer, folder DriveKey, and then clicking on HPUSBF.EXE. It flips into what looks like a DOS command shell to me (or similar) and says "No connected USB Disk Storage devices!"

I'm going to try SoniaC's suggestion above. I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything numerous times over the past couple weeks, but I wasn't able to get my ipod into disk mode until today. We'll see what happens. I'm still open to suggestions/recommendations. Thanks to everyone trying to help thus far!

Dude you rock! I have been struggling all night with this (4 hours to be exact). I gave my duaghter a Nano for her 13th birthday and she had to go to bed without even getting to use it.

I have now formatted using the HP tool and am working to get the updater to reset the Nano...

Thanks for looking out for all of us... I really apprecaite it.

Thanks, - cKamerongo

Let me see if I can summarise the solution that worked for me based in Gailpods instructions

1.Download and install the HP USB formatting tool from here:

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp27001-27500/SP27213.exe

2. Attach the nano and put it into disk mode:

(From 'SoniaC's post)

Move the hold button on and off the press menu and the centre select button at the same time, after 6 seconds the Apple logo will appear - then hold down the select and play buttons at the same time - the nano should flip to disk mode.

I did not have to restart the computer at this point but you might try it if the first run through this doesn't work.

3. Close iTunes if you have it running.

4. Kill the iPodService process.

Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to pull up the system dialog and click on the 'Task Manager' button.

Select the 'Processes' tab.

Select iPodService.exe process and press the 'Stop Process' button.

5. Start the USB formatter application from step (1) and format the nano drive to FAT32.

6. Once it's formatted run the updater application.

7. The 'Restore' option should now be available to you. Select restore.

You nano should now be working again. All music that was on it previously will obviously have been scrubbed.
