Cannot See Nano in Device Manager, ITunes or Ipod Updater

Help! I purchased a new Nano 3 weeks ago and I have been struggling with it ever since. I had it working very briefly, with some songs loaded. However, I then applied the lastest update (03-23) and my nano hasn't worked since. I've tried everything. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. The Nano does not show up in Windows Device Manager, and it does not show up in Itunes or in ipod Updater. In all the postings I've read with suggested solutions the nano was at least showing up SOMEWHERE. Mine doesn't show up in any of the three places. The songs I had loaded onto the Ipod disappeared, although they still show on my computer in ITunes. I have 2 USB 2.0 ports, and I've tried switching between those, but that still doesn't work. I am able to plug my Palm into either of the 2 ports and do a Hotsync, so I know the ports themselves do work. One post suggested putting the nano into disk mode before opening up the ipod updater. I have tried and tried to get my nano into disk mode and I can't get it to do that. The Apple logo comes up, I try to press Select and Play/Pause but it just comes up with the language selection list. I click on "English" and it brings up the regular menu. I do remember my computer restarting with the Nano still connected when I was working on this problem early on. Could that have damaged something or reset something? I've spent hours and hours over the past couple weeks on this problem and I'm truly stumped. Can anyone help? At this point I don't know what else to do except take it back to Best Buy. Thank you in advance to anyone who can advise.

Hi Everyone!
I brought an iPod Nano yesterday, and I have the same problems as everyone else. However, I also have a Shuffle, and when I connect that to the computer, it works fine. I don't understand why it works with that, and not the Nano. It's really annoying me now - I haven't managed to get it to work at all, tho it does 'charge', so the USB must work (all do). I've also tried the 5 'r's, and that doesnt work. I've also tried the screwdave website, and that doesn't work, it isn't reconised on anything, not even on that!

I thought that it didn't work because I have used the computer (and Itunes) with a shuffle, but now I don't. It's never worked. Please, can someone help me?!
Cheers, Alexei

A million thanks to weemalky and others for these instructions. I bought a 4GB Nano 3 days ago and had all the same problems posted here. Was about to either toss it out the window or stomp on it - was up till 1:00 a.m. yesterday trying to get it running with the instructions from the Apple support site. Followed these steps and its finally working. Thanks. Is anyone at Apple listening?

Hi All,
Gee I am glad this post was around today!

I too purchased a 4Gb Nano (for my wife as a gift for mothers day), and applied the 2006-03-23 update.

I applied the update to my sons 4Gb Mini yesterday, and had no issues. I then applied the update to the Nano today, and then ITunes or Updater could no longer see the device. Also, it nearly ground my PC to a halt, while it seems to be "searching" the drive, although I could not access anything on the drive.

Well, I thought the Nano was faulty, so I took it back to the retailer (JB Hifi), who replaced it with a new one.

I took the new one home, connected it, checked ITunes, and all looked OK. I then applied the Updater to this new one (still under the impression that the previous Nano was faulty). Well, same thing happened. Nano effectively dead.

Then I decided to hit the Apple Site, and found this post, and read it intently, understanding what everyone else was saying.

Although, I was a bit nervous about formatting the Nano (it was about 3 hours old now !), I followed Dave's instructions at http://screwdave.blogspot.com/2006/05/ipod-nano-updater-3-23-really-needs.html

Great work Dave, it was excellent. Worked perfectly, and I am now syncing music for my wife.

Thanks heaps, it worked a treat.

Gailpod, I LOVE YOU!!!!! I had the same problem as everyone else here today and was beside myself trying to find a solution! I read yours, downloaded the HP app, ran it and did the steps you posted and my iPod's back from being a table leveling device. Thank you so much for posting that solution!!! You saved me a bleep load of grief, disappointment and heartache. Yes, I know it is only a computer problem, but it was one that blindsided me at the worst possible time. It's now 2:30 AM where I am and I can finally go to bed. Heck, who needs sleep? Amazing, thanks again. You're our iSaviour with this issueUser uploaded file

I am having this same issue. my ipod was not showing up in windows so i figured formatting it might not work. but when i tried it said Device Media is Write-protected and them my ipod just got all screwed up and only goes into disc mode. Every time i try to format gives me the same error. I really need help with this because for now my ipod is useless. If a fix doesnt come soon i might just send it in for service. Why doesnt someone from apple respond to this?

another 10 hours wasted trying to find what in the world is wrong with my Nano iPOD. I am so disappointed with it and the support Apple has given. It seems a lot of people are having problems due this new "update" and they have not done anything about it or mention anything also. All my hopes are gone now.

Hey Gail pod you are an angel. I swear you need to be working for apple, because they couldnt figure out how to help me with my situation and u come along.....

FOLLOW THESE STEPS AND UR IPOD PROBS WILL B FIXED
1. Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (google it) and install.
2. Connect iPod to USB and set the iPod in Disk Mode (details are on website)
3. Run HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and format to FAT32.
4. Run iPod Updater 2006-03-23 and select restore.
5. Run iTunes and copy music

These were the steps given by gail pod, I am only adding one thing..step one, you will find a lot of dead links to download the tool, so when you do the search just add the word "download" at the end. You will still get dead links but keep searching and you will find it...Thanks a million Gail
