Browsers crashing from password autofill

Hi there. Thanks for the reply. Console hasn't logged any messages since August 2010. That's the most recent dated entry in there. It's a bunch of things logged for a 2 week period back then. Nothing before, nothing after.

Thanks again for the reply. No difference after this. I should mention that the normal account I use on the computer is not the admin account. However, I did boot in safe mode into both accounts and repair disk permissions from both. No difference.

One thing that may be odd is that I notice when i'm on www.ebay.com , the status bar says "waiting for www.go.microsoft.com" or something like that right before it crashes. The only 2 sites i've found that crash it are eBay and Hotmail. Hotmail started crashing it first, but I didn't think much of it. But now that i've noticed it spans at least 2 websites and both broswers on the computer, it's getting quite annoying.

Which log are you looking at (highlighted in the left, log list column)? If the colunn is not showing click the Show Log List icon at the top left. Most all errors will appear in the system.log. The All Message and Console Messages show too much routine stuff. You should also take a look under LOG FILES->~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter for the latest Safari or FireFox crash to see what thread crashed it.

Thanks for clearing that up. I've never done any trouble shooting with console before.

Ok...so, in the system log, it basically says that FireFox logged a crash report and it's the same report in the FireFox log.

"Thread 0 crashed with X86 Thread State (32-bit)"

The Thread 0 line in the report says this:

The crash log for Safari says the same thing...(again, Thread 0).

It looks like the same thing whether it's Hotmail or eBay crashing it. But there are older logs showing different information in Thread 0 for them crashing (months ago, this has been going on for a while with Hotmail, it's recent with ebay). But all the entries say Thread 0 crashed.

Your Firefox is out-of-date (v18 is out), but that probably isn't the problem.

Have you considered updating your OS X to at least 10.6? It's more secure than what you are using now.

I got rid of Silverlight. No change.

I have considered 10.6, as I do have the disc. But to be honest, I prefer 10.5. The computer also runs a little better with 10.5. I also have another black MB C2D 2.0 that's running 10.6 and I prefer the older OS.

Anyways. To recap, this happens with FireFox and Safari. And happens with password autofills i've noticed at Hotmail.com and ebay.com

I had considered doing a clean OS install. But i'd rather not, and that would be awful if the issue resurfaced.

Still no luck with this. I'm about ready to do an OS reinstall. But that's going to be a serious PITA if this issue comes back. Any ideas?

Fixed, finally!

It did turn out to be the Silverlight plugin. When deleting plugins, make sure you check the Internet plugins folders in the Library *and* in the Library under each user name for the computer. Physically deleting these plugin files from both sources fixed the problem.

I can't believe it was something so simple. Hope this helps someone else.
