Can't edit artist name in iTunes 11

After updating to iTunes 11, I cannot edit the artist name. I can make changes in the Get Info box but after selecting OK, the changes do not take place. I am trying to merge songs into the same album but the guest artist names mixed in with the artist has scattered my songs all over the place. Any help would be appreciated.

If the music of the artist you want to edit thee name is in the ''downloads'', you have to transfer it in the ''desktop'' of your computer. After that, you will be able to edit the name of the artist, the name of the music, the artwork etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did all that and all though I can edit all the meta info in Get Info to exactly as you describe, I still have four different albums all with the same album art, the same album name, all four now listed as "Various Artists", but if I view the Albums by Artist, the guest artist name still shows in the artist header as if I had not removed it in Get Info which I did. I know that until I can remove the guest artist name in this view the songs will remain scattered. Any other ideas? Much appreciated.

Well, at least we are going in the right direction. From "many" albums down to 4. 🙂

Select the 4 albums together and do a Get Info.

  1. Check both boxes for the Disc Number field.
  2. In the Album field, append "XXX" to the album name. E.g. "Acoustic Heart XXX"
  3. Click OK.
  4. Do Get Info again and remove the XXX
  5. Click OK

Hopefully we now have only one album. 😁

You are so kind for your prompt reply. I did exactly as you said but no change. These four albums were the first of many others I want to deal with so I haven't reduced the number of albums for this particular artist yet. I didn't seem to have this problem in the previous iTunes...just iTunes 11. What I find puzzling is I have removed the guest artist from the Get Info box fields but it still shows up when I select Artists at the top of the window and scroll down to find my same 4 albums all with a different guest artist attached to the artists name. I know if I could strip that out the problem would be solved. When I view by albums, the only thing that shows is the same 4 albums with the same Album name and all say "Various Artists" with no guest artist visible. Starting to pull my hair out!😕

Yes I am. Not sure if it started with v. 11 or not. After updating to v. 11 I got motivated to start organizing my music library better and found that iTunes had scattered or split up many of my albums into multiple albums whenever an artist had a guest or co-artist on a song. So instead of one album with all of its songs I might have as many as 6 albums all with the same album art and title. If I go into the "Get Info" and edit out the guest artist names they don't delete from the album title when viewed By Artist. If u figure it out let me know. Thanks.

I've had issues with past versions of iTunes where multiple albums will appear in the column browser view after making changes to songs, such as recatagorizing the genre. I usually finishing making my edits and then quit and relaunch iTunes and then any "zombie" albums in the list go away. Not sure if this is what you're experiencing but worth a try.

ok I think I REALLY solved this. I just pulled 15 thousand songs off my old computer with Vista to new one with windows 8, I was forced to update my itunes which sucked and I put my files in what I though was the right folder, then dropped the files into the itunes interface. I could play my songs no problem so I though I was good. We I was wanting to combine some album and make some hits records and what not and I could not edit anything. I read through all the online posts and nothing that was suggested really worked. We I had downloaded an album from itunes before I started this and on a hunch I went to see if I could edit that album and sure as **** I could. I looked at the file path with itunes 11 they put the files I downloaded into a spot I would not have suspected so I decided to delete my library and move my files to that location and drop them back into the interface. Now I can edit my files, and not only does it change but it changes the actual files (just make sure you have the Keep My Files Organized option). I still hate the verson, it is terrible. What I loves about Itunes was how it was less flash and more function. I wish I could get ride of all the new glitz

UPDATE I think the reason we could not edit is because with the new windows the spot where you might have stored your old library might not have write permissions. There might be some way to change some admin settings and fix this, idk
