Can you connect the new 13 retina MacBook Pro to older Mac display/monitor

I have an older Apple Monitor purchased in 2009. I am considering purchasing a new 13" MacBook Pro w/Retina display. Can the new MacBook Pro be connected to the older Monitor? is an adaptor required?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

If it's the Apple 24" display, you don't need any adapter for the video. The display's Mini DisplayPort plug goes into the computer's Thunderbolt port. Plug the display's USB plug into the computer.

You will need a MagSafe 2 adapter to power the laptop from the display.
