Why is my Mail so slow to update?

When using my iPhone and iPad my mail syncs instantly with my Hotmail, Live and work email addresses. When i click send it pops onto my phone and iPad within a few seconds. However when using Mail on my new MBPr it is taking between 5 and 10 minutes to register that i have new mail and download it. Even if I click the envelope in the top right corner to ask it to sync nothing still comes down from my Hotmail, Live and Work emails.

Anyone got any ideas? It must be a mail problem as iPhone and iPad are fine!
