Gmail is working on Safari, but the Mail App has not worked in two days, not on cell or wifi. Have tried all types of turnoff and the App is not deletable.

Like this ... Settings>Mail, contacts>Calendars>Gmail account>Mail>Off. Restart the iPad and then go back to
Settings>Mail, contacts>Calendars>Gmail account>Mail>On and try again.
could lso try deleting and readding the email account under mail, contacts, and calendars

Try a Reset - iPad How-Tos http://ipod.about.com/lr/ipad_how-tos/903396/1/
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again.
Cheers, Tom 😉
I have tried all the suggestions above, but the accounts wont delete and the app crashes on both my iphone 5c and my wifes ipad mini, this has only happend today and we can access our mail from a web page or PC we use exchange server mail and hotmail and they both seem to be dead. I restarted the iphone while it was attempting to delete my accounts, which strangly lets me open the mail app, but i just get the searching for mail thing and nothing else. hope someone can advise, i have automatic updates set so this maybe as a result of an update i'm not sure for info i'm running the very latest ios7 in the UK
So... after hours of reading what options Apple thought I might have as to why I could receive mail but not sent it, I finally figured it out. We had just received a new router from T-Mobile and realized that there is an email spam filter built into the router (military overseas). I ensured all versions of the mail program were put in the router as exemptions, but it still didn't work. What I found by accident, after several attempts, was to put in the outbound mail server which Apple automatically sets up for you. For example... I use Yahoo as my mail server. Everything I found for Yahoo was smtp.mail.yahoo.com... but apple actually uses a different version of this. They use apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com. Once I added the "apple" in front of the smtp server address under exemptions for my firewall, voila everything worked fine.
