Make sure your phone isn't on mute, by using the side control up is for ringer down is for vibrate.

If the ringer switch is on, check settings and see what ringtone is selected for the phone.
If all is normal, try restarting your phone, hold down both the Home button and the Power button at the same time and continue holding them until the apple logo appears, if you get the slide to power off screen, continue to hold the buttons down until the apple logo appears. Wait for the phone to restart, its like re-booting a computer, and then give yourself a call to see what happens.
Rebooting resolved the issue.
