I transferred files from desktop Mac to MacBook Air via thumb drive. I can access them when thumb drive is plugged into USB port of laptop, but when thumb drive unplugged, I can't use the files. How transfer thumb drive contents to laptop?

I transferred files from a desktop Mac to MacBook Air via 64 gig thumb drive. Can't I import the thumb drive contents to the laptop, or do I always have to use the thumb drive plugged into the USB port in order to use its contents? If I can import, how do I do that?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
