If I turn on the wifi during airplane mode, can this damage my iPhone 3Gs in someway? I sometimes would like to turn of the company signal, but at the same time I would like to use the internet; without taking our the SIM card. Can this damage my iPhone in any form? It would be grateful your help!

Won't hurt a thing. Hard to imagine Apple would have even enabled the feature to do that if it was unsafe or harmful in any way.
It is very useful when travelling, to ensure no roaming or cellular data use, but still allowing you to take advantage of free wifi hotspots.
Nope...as long as you don't throw it from a airplain and as a result the iPhone hits the company it will be fine.

This is what I do with my old iPhones. Put them in airplane mode, switch on Wifi and essentially you have an iPod Touch. The transmiters for Wifi and Phone are separate so putting your phone in airplane mode and switching on Wifi won't hurt a thing.
