What is "other" memory on my iPad
My iPad has 2GB of "other" listed in the memory bar. What is "other"? How do I delete what is not being used?

I finally got fed up with the "other" portion of my iPad Mini with Retina Display which went up to 6GB, so I did a backup then a restore and now its down to 900mb. Much better. So if anyone is still dealing with this I would try doing a restore from iTunes and see if that fixes it. It worked for me.
This is more than 4 years after you left your initial post but I just wanted you to know I had the same problem, and a "soft reset" as you suggested did the trick. Thank you! I do wish Apple was a little less anal and a little more clear with these things. Tnx again.
I have 5.58 GB of "Other" on my iPad! ***! I did a reboot of my iPad and nothing changed. I can't imagine that all of that is from cache from apps. It's a total waste. I don't even have that many apps on my iPad, I only have two pages of apps. I don't get it!
It contains things such as Safari's cache and cookies, contacts, calendar entries, emails (and their attachments) and the contents of your third-party apps. So if you have newspaper and magazines apps and/or third-party music, video or photo apps then you could have a fair amount of 'other' - if you think that it's too large for what you have on your iPad then try a soft-reset (press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, ignoring the red slider, until the Apple logo should appear; you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot) syncing to your computer and backing up and then restoring to that backup and see if that reduces it
An "other" that large usually indicates that the "other" included corrupted files. Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
To restore from backup see:
To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software
The "other" is things not included in the other categories listed. Hence the name "other". It includes music artwork, maybe apps date, Messages.
You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.
Cheers, Tom 😉
