Why won't my MacBook shut down?

Every time I go to shut my MacBook down it gets to the screen with the spinning circle and then doesn't shut down. It just sits on this screen and won't go any further. How do I fix it? What is wrong with my MacBook?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Force shut down by holding the power button down until it shuts off, then reset the SMC.
