What is the /etc/ folder and what does it contain?

I figured since it was hidden it was something important😁but what does etc stand for?
I would suggest you look at: Unix directory structure - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. All those hidden directories contain files (some also hidden) used by the Unix part of OS X. It's very important that you not mess with them because it's really easy to muck up your OS if you aren't sure of the results of anything you do behind the scenes.
So we generally suggest you just leave all of that alone. Better safe than sorry, if you will.
