I was going to download windows 7 or windows 8 to install on my macbook. I had two options for the windows 7 version, one for mac which uses a third party (?) the other just plain windows 7. Do I need to buy a mac version?

There is no "mac version" of Windows. The version you buy for BootCamp are the same you buy for a PC.
The one you buy, though, is the question. For Windows 7, 32bit versions only address 3.5 GB RAM max. 64 bit Home addresses 16 GB RAM. 64-bit Pro addresses up to 192 GB.
Also, the compatibility with Windows 8 (which is new) depends on your OSX verion. Are you running Snow Leopard, Lion, or MountainLion?
Thank you steve359. I have a late 2009 macbook running snow leopard. The only reason I need windows is for IE. I need to connect to a work place network from home and work only supports IE, so I guess I would be just fine with Windows 7 32 bit verson.
I would buy 64-bit. You may want to use it un the future, and OEM (not the OEM that comes with a Dell or Asus, but a full OEM from Amazon or Microcenter) version of 64-bit Pro is not much more than OEM 32-bit.
Think of it as "future-proofing".

Windows 8 is not supported by Boot Camp at this time and no official drivers are available. Get Windows 7 instead.
