Cleaning Apple LaserWriter Select 360

The rollers in a printer are all different sizes. Is it exactly two inches, and repeating every two inches? This info can be used to determine which rollers are involved.

Is the toner properly fused to the paper, or can you wipe toner powder off the paper?

Did you get "known good" cables with the printer? if so, what kind? In not, what are you using for cables and how have you tried to get it to work?

Does the computer maintain the date and time if you pull the plug for ten minutes?

Shut off the computer first, then remove the computer-end of the 25-pin cable. The only port on a Mac that has 25 pins and looks like a parallel or old-fashioned serial port is actually a SCSI port, and your printer will never work plugged into that.

The printer [serial] port on a Mac is a small round connector, reminds you of a S-Video jack. Mini DIN-8. there are two, right next to the keyboard connector. One is labelled with a print Icon, and the other with a modem icon. You can use an Apple Printer-8 cable, or you can use PhoneNet boxes and telephone cords. If you expect to have more Macs in the future, PhoneNet is expandable, the printer-8 cable solution is not.

You may be due for a new toner cartridge. If you remove the toner cartridge from the printer and turn the gears by hand, you may see the stripes or toner buildup on the green drum. Static buildup will cause the rollers to not wipe clean or having it set for a long time, exposure to light for extended periods. There are any number of reasons for the toner to not wipe clean as the drum rotates.

That printer is not the easiest to open up and do a deep cleaning your self. Plan on spending a fair amount of time at it. fixyourownprinter.com offers solutions for the brave.

lists two products, one for fading - that is really labor intensive so keep dust away from your printer and save yourself some future trouble. ( dust builds up on one side of a mirror in the bottom of the printer and causes uneven printing)

A new toner cartridge may be the fastest fix but it might not fix everything. A general vaccuming and dusting of exposed rollers helps, too.
