VLC - image adjust turns picture white

Watching MKV movies plugged into to my HD TV.

Since they are too dark, wanted to adjust the brightness within VLC.

But when I go to the Video Effects window, and click the image adjust button, where this can be changed,

the picture screen turns white.

Any ideas?

Same when watching on my laptop.
