imap.gmail.com not responding...

All -

I'm having the same issue with Gmail that seemed to have cropped up in August of this year (judging by other posts). When trying to access my Gmail account via the Mail app on my iPhone 5 and iPad 2, I get the error message:

"The IMAP server 'imap.gmail.com' is not respondin. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct inormation in the 'Incoming Mail Server' field."

I've tried all the workarounds I can find: delete account and re-add account, delete account/reboot/re-add account, delete account and re-add account as "other" IMAP account... Nothing seems to be working!!

Any advice??

Thanks in advance!

I have solved this on an iPad 2 another way. I was getting the same message as in the original post, and the problem was internittent - email working some days and not others - very annoying.

1. I deleted the Gmail account in Mail on the iPad.

2. Go to 'Mail, Contacts. Calendars'

3. Go to 'Add Account...'

4. Instead of using the dedicated 'GMail' button (as I have previoiusly), use the 'other' button at the bottom.

5. Choose 'Add Mail Account'

6. Manually input your details and server settings (username, password, smtp server name etc.) as given on the Gmail IMAP settings configuration page (you can also find them in your Apple Mail preferences account settings if you have a Mac running OS X).

7. This worked for me.

It seems that there may be a problem with the GMail dedicated 'button' in the Mail app in that it does does not configure Mail correctly. This must be the responsibility of both Apple and Google to sort out, I would think.

Hi Shruthi -

I would recommend trying the work arounds mentioned earlier in this discussion (deleting / re-connecting your account, etc.)

However, if your problem persists, you may have the same issue I had. I realized that I was getting this error as a result of the network to which I was connected. I would only get the error at my office, where the WiFi is extremely secured due to sensitivie client information. This causes some friction with the Gmail servers. I just switched off WiFi on my phone and had to come to terms with my iPad not updating email at work.

In my case, there wasn't really a work around as our internet needs to be this secure. But I was able to narrow down the problem! My gmail works everywere else, so no need to delete my account.

Getting the settings set correctly can be disconcerting. I was mystified when I rebuilt the account twice, and everything verified. Then I found that I didn't have "Use SSL" enabled under the "Advanced" options on "Outgoing Mail Server" on the "Account" screen of the phone's mail settings. When I flipped that little puppy to "on," Mail's in box filled.

If some of the methods already posted did not work, check your settings to be sure that you can use "cellular data" for mail. To check go to Settings>Cellular (for iPhone 5s at least, I assume others are similar). Verify that Cellular Data is on (green). It probably is if you download stuff all the time (I keep mine off so my kids don't use up my data). Then, scroll down to "Use Cellular Data For:" Verify that Mail is allowed (green). If it is not, move the slider. In fact I would try this before doing any of the other stuff that was suggested on this page and many others. good luck!

I have tried all these solutions to no avail.

I keep getting the popup:

Cannot Get Mail

The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding.

Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings.

The account works fine on my iPad and both my MacBook Air and MacBook Pros. Very annoying and it cropped up out of nowhere at the end of April 2014.
