I've tried to eliminate system errors by performing a clean install of ML. What's the best way to set up my iMac for a singlet user?

One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.

Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.

I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.

The follow are the latest entries into my system log file, after I lost connection to the internet, and then regained connection after rebooting my cable modem:

What's this weird Win7 software that won't work with Windows 7 on VMware Fusion, but will on Parallels Desktop?

Other than that, I think you're stressing too much. Mountain Lion is stable. You may be seeing errors in the Console, but that always happens.

As for iCloud: if you don't want to use it, don't set it up. Simple. It's not compulsory.

Going single-user only isn't recommended. I'd advise you to use an Admin user for admin tasks (such as updates etc.) and have a Standard user that you use for your everyday tasks, such as working in Parallels Desktop.

Other than that, you don't actually seem to have any problems requiring assistance. The problem seems to be this weird software and its incompatibility with VMware.

Thanks guys, I appreciate you taking the time to read my post.

Linc, it's probably because I've had so many problems, under so many different circumstances, that I thought my best approach was to ask the community how best to configure the iMac after a clean install, hoping to therefore prevent them. One that was inferred (I think) is the ethernet link down message, whereby I lost connection to the internet, and my land-line phone. The problems I've had include applications crashing; apps not launching, unprovoked zooming, brower tabs (not the browser) crashing (while I was filling out forms in them), page switching, frequent trips to the widgets page, endless spinning beach balls, CPU overloading, random access memory maxing out, - wow, just now this page zoomed while I was typing, and I can only minimize it to about 300% of normal, so I feel like I need to finish this before it crashes. This post is actually a recovered edit from earlier when I was replying to Scotch and Neil, before you replied, and the page switched and I could not get back to it without exiting and then re-entering. -- Ok, just now Mission Control took over for no reason and I had to click on this page to get back here and it's still zoomed out -- but wait, the View Actual Size works now so the page is normal (the type size was 18 points before I could view as normal and I believe the default is 12pt. This is just a sample of the problems. The entire list seems endless.

Linc, in trying to expand my knowledge of ML I've come across a lot of your answers, successfully helping non-techs like myself, so I have respect of your skills. I've got another question that relates to all this on the community board but I'm afraid to get details right now for fear of losing this post. The first computer I bought was in 1982, 30 years ago, so I'm not completely unfamiliar with them, though I've not used OSX, and I've never experienced the problems like I'm having now. My local Apple dealer has a backlog well into next year, so I'm trying to avoid that route. Any suggestions you may have will be appreciated, that's for sure.

Scotch, I appeciate your advice about my single-user issue and iCloud concerns, and will take it. However, when you begin losing your internet connection frequently for no apparent reason that constitutes a problem in my world (it also makes my telephone unusable) and I am therefore compelled to try and fix it. You didn't know that so I'm certainly not critisizing. Notwithstanding, you do bring up a curious point about Fusion v. Parallels, and why VantagePoint (the application I need to run) won't work with Fusion but will with Parallels. At this point, I'm inclined to believe that it runs best in Boot Camp, but having the integration that a VM can provide makes me more productive in using it, and some other programs that augment it. But I'm going to check into it - fortunately technical support at the company said they would remotely reinstall it and push all the necessary data back into it. It's a stock market interanalysis package that needs a daily update.

Neil, your reply was completely useless and I have no idea why you posted.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Linc,

Thank you for leading me down the path to having a much better performing Mac! When I made a guest account and used it for a few hours it felt like I was using a brand new machine. I could produce no errors but on one occasion Mission Control fired while I was in mouse prefs (low battery), the network dropped once which I recovered by rebooting the modem (could be the modem?), and once while sliding the mouse across my mouse pad a Safari page zoomed. I could not get the iMac to repeat these, but I can live with an occasional inconvience.

Then, as instructed, I booted into safe mode. In SM, everything seemed to move in slow motion. When I clicked on Launch Pad it slowly opened, and once in the background screen flickered and the icons seemed to kind of float upon this flickering backdrop. I finally got a few apps opened, and while opening a new tab in Safari I finally got the spinning beach ball. So I waited, and waited, finally resorting to a hard shut down. So I rebooted back into Safe Mode and again everything went so slow . . . I could tell that there just were no resources available for the machine to perform. Once I got Activity Monitor opened it was apparent: wired memory read 2GB, at one point VM size went into TBs! The page in's and out's, and swap used, were enormous. Everything seemed to indicate the culprit was a browser plugin, Firefox to be more exact, but with Sarafi the behaviors were similar. I also have a backup app that leaves a file to run in the background that may be causing some problems. I took some screen shots but thought the better to not post them.

I'll keep an eye on that backup background file (it's the only process running that doesn't state that its 64 bit version); but, once I uninstalled the Flash Reader plugin, deleted the pluginreg, and reinstalled an updated version of the reader I could tell that my life had just changed for the better. I'm not going to shout out too loud just yet as I've only been back to my regular status for a couple of hours now, but the system is a lot snappier, programs are opening quicker, and etc. As you recall, many of the strange things that were happening were intermittent, so it will take time to tell.

But I think you already knew how this was going to play out. There are a couple of issues that I'd like your opinion on, if you're so inclined. Firefox is my favorite browser, but as you know it's also a memory hog. I also know that it's foolish to perform a lot of maintanence tasks when using OSX, e.g. defragging, cleaning caches, and so forth, because they're just not needed - in most cases. So, I'd love to hear your thoughts with respect to browers and routine maintanence. I suspect others reading this will be interested as well.

Thanks a million for your assistance, and if I have problems that resurface I'll come back to the community and ask for help. What a great place! God bless and happy holidays . . . Mark

Dec 19, 2012 8:46 PM in response to Marmadukemark

Safari is the only browser I use regularly, so I don't have an opinion about it versus others.

How to maintain a Mac

1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.

2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.

3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cleaners,” "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this sort of stuff is useless, or worse than useless.

The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.

As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Use your computer; don't fuss with it.

Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

The free anti-malware application ClamXav is not crap, and although it’s not routinely needed, it may be useful in some environments, such as a mixed Mac-Windows enterprise network.

4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.

There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.

Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.

In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.

Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most users don't.

5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Mac notebooks that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.

Use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeperto explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.

6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” “running periodic scripts,” “dumping log files,” “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems. They're not for preventive maintenance.

The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

Linc, I think you've gone distinctly overboard with this particular statement. I've read numerous comments on numerous unaffiliated sites in which Disk Warrior was hailed as a saviour for the way it was able to repair corrupted disks—though I haven't used it myself. Even if you have a backup, there's always a time differential between when an error occurs and when the last backup was made, and Disk Warrior (or other, similar, software) can be a useful tool that allows you to quickly get a system back in working order before the step of restoring from backup and potentially losing interim data, not to mention time. Additionally, there's always the possiblity that the backup itself contains the error…

Marmadukemark, I encourage you to take this last portion of Linc's advice with a pinch of salt. Read around, and you'll find his opinion on the topic is by no means universally held.

Other than that, I'm glad you managed to get things sorted out.

Merry Christmas!

Dec 20, 2012 9:39 AM in response to Scotch_Brawth

I haven't used it myself.

That's why you don't know that Disk Warrior is slower and less effective than restoring from a backup. Time Machine backs up once an hour.

You also don't know that any drive that throws an error causing directory damage more than once should be replaced.

If you want to waste your own money on Disk Warrior, no argument from me. If you want to waste other people's money on it, at least take the trouble to learn something about it first.

Dec 20, 2012 1:01 PM in response to Linc Davis

Time Machine backs up once an hour.

I guess it depends how much you get done in an hour, and whether or not you use Time Machine. Whether one should trust Time Machine is, of course, a discussion for another thread and time entirely.

You also don't know that any drive that throws an error causing directory damage more than once should be replaced.

That's true. It's not something I've ever had the misfortune to encounter.

If you want to waste your own money on Disk Warrior, no argument from me. If you want to waste other people's money on it, at least take the trouble to learn something about it first.

I think you value your own opinion far too much for any discussion on to be worth engaging in, at least on this topic. My encouragement to the OP was that he should not be taken in by your authoritative stance in this case, nothing more.

I shan't be responding further, given that the thread is now marked as answered, and given we're going decidedly off-topic.

Merry Christmas!

Linc, I think you've gone distinctly overboard with this particular statement. I've read numerous comments on numerous unaffiliated sites in which Disk Warrior was hailed as a saviour for the way it was able to repair corrupted disks—though I haven't used it myself.

If you have no actual experience of Disk Warrior you should refrain from critquing or praising it.

FWIW I agree 100% with Linc, spend money and time on Backups, not DW.

Dec 20, 2012 2:17 PM in response to Linc Davis

Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.

To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.

Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:

12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4

After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?
