What fan speeds are you seeing? What are you using to monitor them? You might try getting iStat Pro, although I don't think it will show system processes for Mountain Lion. Might show the fan speeds, though. No longer supported by the developer.
i use smcfancontrol to check fan speed. so, i have only the main fan and it's on 1200 rpm. you can hear the fan, in difference to my mac mid 2011 isn't silent. so, i'm asking me, if this is only my problem or somebody else with a new late 2012 mac has the same issue....
or this noise is produced by the fusion drive disk... i've found some other thread regarding this:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4606900
smc and pram already resetted serveral times...
I'm curious and a bit confused: you are referring to a late 2012 27" - that would be one of the brand new super thin iMacs and the 27" size isn't shipping until January (as far as I know) - so how did you get your hands on one?
yes - this brand new, and i my opinion "loud" imac. i bought him via apple online store as soon as it was possible. i'm really disappointed about the noise emission... my "old" mid 2011 imac didn't produced such a disturbing noise.
I ordered the new (super thin) 27" iMac on the first day it was available (11/30/12). Mine delivered today and after 2 hours of setting up the fan is running fast at all times. iStatPro is showing ~2700 rpm. I'm trying to find information on standard fan speeds but not much on the internet at this time. The noise is pretty loud... will be calling Apple support if this keeps up.
Did not realize they are shipping already; not too many people here will have any experience with these because they are brand new, but, when you consider how thin it is, it does not surprise me. Actually I am surprised there is room for a fan; no idea where it is located at this point though.
iStatPro shows me 1200rpm. I will call apple support tomorrow... all temperature sensors are below 30°.
1,200 doesn't sound that fast to me. It only shows one fan?
This model has only one fan, as i know. I checked the speeds from my older imac - 3 fans, all below 1000 rpm and after boot and login the system is silent.

iStat Pro says my speed is 1200.
I've had this unit for two days now, installing lots of software, and I have yet to hear the fan over the disk drives in my office and said drives are pretty quiet as is my office.
Of course, installing software generally doesn't push the CPU. Perhaps the fan will be much louder when the CPU is pushed and temperatures begin to rise. I know that's the case with my mid-2010 iMac.
The case of the iMac has never been other than cool while my mid-2010 runs warm (not hot) just sitting there with the CPU in an idle state.
I converted all my data from a 2009 Mac mini Time Machine back up. When I reboot or wake the new 27" iMac from sleep the fan immediately goes to 2700 rpm. Not sure if the TM conversion has anything do with it. I have a case # into Apple support and will be calling them today.

After 25 years in the IBMPC/Windows World I became accustomed to two things. One, scrape the hard drive clean and re-install the OS every 6 months to a year; and, two, on purchase of a new PC always start from scratch. In the couple of dozen years I was in that world I never experienced 99.9% of the problems reported.
When I moved to the Mac world in early 2009 I automatically incorporated #2 in my routine (I've never had to do the first) and I have never experienced 99.9% of the problems I've seen in these forums.
I know that Apple is supposed to be 'better' at updates/data migration than Windows, but I sometimes wonder...
Good luck with your support case.
I've done sucessive migrations, including using Setup Assistant (on the first boot of the new Mac) and never seen 99.99% of the problems I see on these forums.
But can't vouch for Setup Assistant in ML or with the new iMacs. I've done it with Snow, problem free.

It is my belief that some 'problems' are caused by particular apps and if one doesn't use those apps then they don't see the problems. I've just found it better for me to start from the beginning rather than migrate. For those with different apps the migration path may be the better one.
