QuickTime only plays some of my .mov files

I can only play some of my .mov files in quicktime but others I only get the audio and no video. On my Mac at school and my friend's Mac these files play fine but not on my Mac at home. I can't figure out what's going on. I don't understand why some work and some don't can you help me?
