Sure it's okay. In actual fact the iPad will "breath" better and possibly last longer

There are tons of options. You can get a basic neoprene sleeve that will protect your iPad even though you can't use the device while it's in there. There are portfolio cases that open up like a book, there are keyboard cases if you want it a bit bulkier (for me, easier to use with a real keyboard)
There's a near limitless variety of cases out there. I'd suggest start your shopping at Amazon. They are the best place to have stuff from all over and in all varieties. Office Supply stores may have a more limted variety but you may be able to take your device in and give the case a 'test drive'.
Amazon and places like TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning, etc, are places to get name brand cases for cheaper, but retailers like best buy, walmart, etc will have a more set inventory an not the 'hit or miss' of a cheaper place.
