"Transfer" Notes from the local folder on my Desktop

How do I transfer my notes from the local folder on my Desktop to iCloud so they'll sync with my iPhone?

New notes are syncing fine, I just need to get my old notes uploaded.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
