iPhone 5, my 'define' word feature no longer is an option. How can I get it back?

I've googled this numerous times and can't find anything. Last night I went to the Apple store to speak with a "Genius". 3 different employees told me they have never heard of this and recommended that I try "googling it". I figured I might be better off trying to solve this problem on my own...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Also, i'm not looking for the temporary fix of changing to British English. I live in the USA, not in Britain.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.1

If you go to settings>General> Keyboards, is your keyboard set to "English"?

Also, go to Settings>General>International and make sure of the following:

Language - English

Voice Control - English

Region Format - United States.

Doing a restart after changing all these settings wouldn't hurt at all.

Then, go to notepad or where and look for the define option, then it will prompt you to install the english dictionary.

When you say notepad are you referring to the noted app?

All the settings youve mentioned are in English. After switching languages a couple times, the define option suddenly appeared in apps where it hadnt appeared before, even when i reset everything back to English. But as I've stated, even with all the language international keyboard settings in English, with the new found define option, the iphone dictionary still only looks up words in French (before it was Spanish).

Actually, now the dictionary looks up words in both french and spanish, depending on the word. The English words that dont appear in the Spanish and French dictionaries dont appear with the define option, and in ibooks, show no definitions for them.

In Notes, set you keyboard to English (UK). The type the word "colour" and do select/define. What dictionary gets used (if any)?

Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of users who cannot get all the dictionaries to download for some reason, and I have not seen any total fix. You should be able to download/access US English, British English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese by choosing the appropriate keyboard and selecting define for an appropriate word, and in all Apple apps.

You're a genius dude. The UK trick worked. I switched the phone to UK English, and chose the Uk Keyboard. Now I can define words in English, even if I'm using the American keyboard and the language of the software is back to American English. But yeah I see what you're saying. IT should be as easy as just selecting what dictionary you want to use for each word, although now it seems to do it automatically. If the phone recognizes the word as being a Spanish word, French word, etc.

Thanks a lot. I'll keep posting if I notice any other quirks.

I can get the English dictioery to apper and saves, but I need the Japanese one also.

If I download them (1 or 2) the do not appear until i back out and then go back in again.

If I switch or close the app its not there again and have to repate the process.

I want to save this option so I dont have to do this every time.

I have the Ipad 2 and Iphoe 4, its the same on both.

Any Ideas?

THIS IS NOT A BUG!!!!! You have to manually install the dictionary. It was not included on iOS 7 to preserve memory on the install.

1. Be running iOS 7

2. Read this WHOLE thread

3. BE ON AN ACTIVE/WORKING WI-FI NETWORK

4. Go anywhere on your phone where you can type a word. Type a word there.

5. Select (Highlight) that word. Hit the little arrow that pops up until you see the word "DEFINE"

6. Click that word "DEFINE".

7. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the dictionary you want to use, if one is not already installed. I use the English New Oxford American Dictionary.

8. Download the dictionary you want. Use it. Be happy.

Totally ignorant.

Here is another example this problem, which you do not seem to understand is different than the one addressed by your solution. Your step 8, "Download the dictionary you want, " has to be constantly repeated in order to get it to always appear when Define is selected. This is presumably a bug that Apple must fix.
