Is Garage Band more powerful on the iPad?

Just curious.. my friend brought over his iPad and I was messing around with it and it seemed to have a lot more features available (or maybe just more accessible)?

For example there's a lot of interactive instruments on the iPad including a way to sample through the iPad alone whereas with Garageband on my computer I can only use premade loops for the most part instead of making them myself. Am I wrong to think the iPad has a better GarageBand?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

It is a very different GarageBand on the iPad. You have the smart instruments, that are fun, but nearly no tools to edit your music and to correct a wrong note, less instruments, and less loops. All the automations are missing; you cannot change the tempo while you are playing.

But the smart instruments are really fun!

I like to record a track on the iPad, then transfer the song to my mac and finsh the project there.

Yeah I was doing some experimentation with that.. do a lot of people use iPad GarageBand in conjunction with Mac GarageBand? It seems like a pretty ideal setup since it gives you all the tools of both applications and they seem to play together pretty nicely.

Would it be reason enough to invest in a cheap older version iPad?? I'm also considering picking up an Apogee one, then I would just need some real instruments to plug in and it would have a built in mic for sampling.
