why can't I hear sound through apple tv mirroring?

Just got a new Macbook Pro about a month ago - if I play a movie / song in iTunes and click the airplay button, it's great - both sound / video come out of my TV courtesy of AppleTV.

If I'm watching a YouTube video however, and I click my airplay button , it will mirror my display only, but not play sound. I've also gone into system preferences and attempted to select "device for sound output" to AppleTV (it's listed, but won't let me actually select it).

Do I need to do something else? or will sound not work when watching other websites?

thoughts? suggestions?

You will probably have to connect a 3.5mm headphone jack to RCA male adapter into the corrosponding input on the TV. Usually HDMI input 1 that has a analog audio input. You should have audio then, most websites do things as cheap as possible, which means low budget IT folks. Hope this helps. SJP

Hi Double B33,

Did you ever get a solution to your problem? I'm experiencing the same thing, except that I get no sound when I'm on a FaceTime call. I haven't tried this on YouTube, but will later and report my findings.

Hey Bob NYC - it works perfectly sometimes, and doesn't work at other times. I really have no idea why, but I will say that it has been working correctly more often than not of late. still not sure why, nor have I figured out how to "make it work" when it's not....
