i7 MBP 8.2 AMD 6750M 2011 Crashes, Red Horizontal Lines, won't boots

Crash, horizontal red lines, won't boot, SMC PRAM reset, failed boots, successful boot cycles:

For about a week, I have been struggling with crashes, followed by red horizontal lines on the screen, and inability to boot into multi-user mode. It will boot into single user mode, with red stripes on black background. To get it to boot again I "shutdown -h now" from single user mode, SMC reset, PRAM reset 3 times, and attempt boots with <command> R two to three times unsuccessfully. Then, if I am lucky, when I do a boot into single-user mode (power, <command> S), it boots into single user mode with a black background and no stripes, then I "exit" to boot. If I am unlucky, the black screen will have red stripes or red snow in single-user mode. After several crashes, I also have to remove my hard drive, and do a disk repair and permission repair, while connected to a different mac, or format and restore ML. (I have two backups of my personal data.) The failed multi-user boots are terminated by grey or black screens of death, accompanied by heat and the fands running fast. The fans also run in single user mode without processor load if they red stripes are on the screen. A successful multi-user boot is cool without fans running. I didn't have any crashing problems before switching to ML recently.

Memtest fails in multi-user mode (but not single-user mode):

Running memtest on 8GB RAM in multi-user mode fails at a single address on the most significant byte (with 1 bit difference). However, memtest does not show a failure in single-user mode, nor with only a single 4GB module in multi-user mode.

Increased stability with gfxCardStatus and Flash unininstall:

Using gfxCardStatus Integrated Only mode, and uninstalling Flash, seems to help. However, I do get crashes or inability to wake up display which seems to be associated with processes like (google Chrome renderer) which forces gfxCardStatus out of "Integrated Only" mode. http://gfx.io/switching.html

Future plans:

I am in Mexico where RAM is outrageously expensive. So I will order RAM from the USA and try new 16 GB RAM because it is cheaper part swap than the logic board. It makes sense to try the cheap stuff first. I would rather switch to Linux and continue my bioinformatics work than pay and wait to replace the i7 logic board which warranty expired a few months ago. 😟 I refuse to hit it with a heatgun to reflow the BGA solder on the GPU. I really need the i7 data processing throughput I paid for. 😢

Suggestions?

Memtest passing in single-user mode, failing in multi-user mode:

Memtest documentation says "Suspect the CPU caches if the tests pass in single-user mode but fail in a terminal window under the full OS." Since I won't have new RAM for over a week, I am delaying suspicions.

Installing ML on an empty partition seems to work:

I noticed that most all of the complaints I saw about Mountain Lion crashing, corrupting disks, and not booting were associated with updating to Mountain Lion on a machine that did not have ML pre-installed. So instead of updating from Snow Leopard, I cloned a bootable Snow Leopard, and re-partitioned the drive with another seperate partition and installed Mountain Lion on the empty new partition. So I could use System Preferences-->Startup Disk to select the partition to startup with Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. The important difference was the Mountain Lion partition started empty and did not have an OS installed before ML.
I found that multiple Snow Leopard boots could not flush out the graphical problems. The best I could do booting Snow Leopard was boot, but wide vertical red lines on the screen would not disappear.
However, booting Mountain Lion in recovery mode multiple times unsuccessfully, seemed to flush out the graphic problem and restore normal multi-user mode booting. For good measure, I booted in recovery mode and shutdown in the apple pulldown menu 6 times. My thinking was the recovery mode startup was flushing out bad states and I was attempting a deeper flush of bad states. http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
Since doing that yesterday morning, my laptop has had normal beautiful graphic appearance of ML, no glitches, no crashes, and boots fine, for 36 hours now. I have also fully loaded all the cores of the i7 processor for several 10 minutes with bioinformatics processing to heat up the processor as a stress test. I also installed flash and watched YouTube videos without crashing.


I belive the important steps were:

  1. Install ML on seperate partition where no OS exists.
  2. Lots of OS X Recovery mode boots and shutdowns to flush out bad state.

(Note: before this mess, ML was running stable for a couple months and I didn't reboot for a month or so.)

I agree Clinton. Since I tried a new hard drive, that leaves the RAM or logic board. Corsair offered to warrantee and send new RAM. 😀 The nearest Apple Store is 1,000 miles away. There is a local Authorized Apple Service Provider here, but my friend, who took her MBP Retina in there for a broken USB port, said their quote to replace the logic board was as much as the laptop costs. I may go to the USA next month. So I should try new RAM ASAP. I am hoping the issue will be solved by replacing RAM.


Don Montalvo said he stop the freezing by turning off SMS in the PRAM until he replaced the RAM as the real fix. I think I turned off SMS months ago and forgot about it, but maybe it got undone with a Mountain Lion update. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3013824?start=0&tstart=0

I tested if my computer would hang, if I don't use the Mountain Lion GUI. I didn't log in on the GUI. I used ssh from my Mac Mini, to launch scripts while heavily load the i7 CPU while not logged on to the GUI. I woke up the screen a few time successfully. However Dec 30, early in the morning, the screen remained black and the login screen would not appear pressing a key. My ssh sessions were still working and I could continue to run scripts and load all the CPU cores verified by "top" on the command line. However, I could not ssh to my MacBook Pro!

(Previously established SSH sessions continued to work, but new ones could not be started.)


I ran memtest afteward 4 times without failure while I went to sleep.


Looking at the console log, something killed authentication, which I assume disabled the ability to ssh into my MacBook Pro.

Looks like a firmware update fixed the problem. I suspect a firmware update caused the problem.


Running Photo Booth would reliably crash the laptop. After downloading and installing Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.5, I was able to run Photo Booth 25 times without crashing. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1474

I tempted fate and plugged the external monitor into the mini-DVI/thunderbolt port. The MBP screen went black with the backlight on, and the laptop was unusable. Turning off and on would not reboot reliably before re-installing Mountain Lion. Boot starts with red lines and ends in black screen.


Evidently there is an extended service available for 15" Mid 2010 MBP manufactured between April 2010 and Feb 2011. My15' Early 2011 MBP was manufactured in Feb 2011. Seems like mine fits the manufacture date, but mine is a Early 2011 MBP.

Hi spritrig,


Your issue is clearly hardware but it is in no way related to the known issue listed in TS4088. This fault was related to a silicon error with the Nvidia chip used only in the MBP mid 2010 for a number of months, not the ATI in your machine.

If it is failing the memtest then replacing the RAM would always be a good idea although the look of the screenshots the only way memory could be causing those issues is if the memory is used by the video card (shared memory). The onboard Intel 3000 chip does use the system memory but the ATI does not. You could help rule this out by turning off the onboard Intel video card and only using ATI. In theory if it is one of the video cards then disabling that card should make the problem go away which would be a good work around.


Of course since you highly suspect that the RAM is faulty, you can't really trust the machine until that's fixed.


In the end if the RAM swap doesn't fix it then as you have pointed out, the next step is a replacement logic board. Given that it is out of warranty, if the local Apple repair centre is out of your price range then;

MrSparkle75, I doubt the RAM is causing the graphics problems. The RAM only fails at a single address for a single bit. Swapping slots or using only one DIMM does not change the symptoms. I have tested the RAM in single user mode and from remote ssh in multi-user mode many times without fail. So I am not so sure about the RAM. I will try your test of using the ATI after I re-install Mountain Lion for the 15th time! The issue actually seems to be associated with the switching between the GPUs. It could be firmware too. However, none of the EFI firmware for early 2011 MBPs will install on my MBP.


There is no mention of NVIDIA, GPU, nor any cause of fault in TS4088.


My MBP always freezes with a black or grey screen. The stripes occur with MBP functioning and interacting. It has the symptoms and was manufactured in February 2011 as specified in TS4088.


"computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011."

OK, this nightmare appears to have ended with the OS X 10.8.3 update.


I could occasionally get several days without crashing by using gfxCardStatus to lock the dedicated GPU to prevent GPU switching. The crashes and reinstalls of the OS X have been very inconvenient for months. The Authorized Apple Service Center said the problem was logic board, though it passed tests. Said the extended warranty didn't apply. For some reason I could not reproduce the crash there. Once I got home, the computer was constantly crashing for days, to the point it would consistently crash within a few minutes of booting.


A notice for the 10.8.3 OS X update. I updated. It has been nearly 24 hours, I have tried to crash the machine by setting GPU switching, installing flash, using Photo Booth, loading web pages that precipitated crashe, watching videos. I haven't gotten it to crash.


I optimistically hope the 10.8.3 OS X update fixed it and this keeps up. There were new Radeon GPU driveers in the update. 🙂

Well it crashed many times after a day of working. More than 20 attempts to safeboot and restore boot before it works again. The Auth. Apple Service center here in Mexico says it is $1275 USD for a new logic board and $200 to resolder the GPU/CPU which has a 40% probability of success. Thinking it might be a bad solder joint, I took the drive out and put the laptop in the freezer (without the hard drive) a few minutes untill it got cool after a couple crashes. It wouldn't boot after the crash and had horizontal red lines. I took the laptop out of the freeer, put the room temperature HD back in, turned it on, there were no red lines, and it booted.


Next times I will try just putting the RAM in the freezer, or cooling the laptop without the RAMs. I keep the drive at room temperature to avoid condensation on it. I only put the laptop in for a few minutes to minimise condensation.


My plan now is get a Mac Mini with fusion drive without a GPU! So I can have a fast computer while the laptop is getting worked on, and have extra compute power later. Have the service center resolder the BGA of the GPU and processor on the Macbook Pro logic board, and upgrade to to an SSD.

The Apple Store diagnosed the GPU as being bad. I was immediately offered "flat rate Depot Repair" for $310. I am very pleased with this! 😀 Thank you so much Apple Store North County, Escondido!!! 🙂 I was even allowed to swap out my drive with my data with the original failing and securely erased HDD. Looking forward to getting back my i7 and throwing 16GB RAM and 500GB SSD in it!


I ordered a mac mini i7 with fusion drive for extra compute capacity. 🙂
