It's extremely annoying and I've been dealing with it since 10.8 but I can't take it anymore. Is there any way to disable the 'OS X Updates Available' pop-up notification that appears in the upper right when there's new software ready to be installed? If not, please move this to a feature request forum. Thanks.

I found one good solution,
Most of the updates that are super annoying is for apps that we don't even use that often or even never.
To reduce the amount of times that nasty notification pops up in your screen, delete all apple apps you can, therefore you will only be ask to update whenever you have to do the OX.
Hopefully this way product managers at apple seeing the use of apple apps drop dramatically they will put as a priority fixing apple notifications.
It might be fine if you strictly stick to the Apple menu. If you've got any third party software you may regret it. Apple updates some piece of software (e.g., iTunes that I never use) and my $1000 Fortran compiler doesn't work.
It's not possible to delete that. Also, if you don't install updates, they'll be installed automatically. See > http://www.apple.com/feedback
To delete this notification, you have to open System Preferences > Software Update and turn off the option to search updates

Could you explain that a bit further please - nothing gets installed on my Macs automatically - I have everything disabled (unless I've missed something):
I read in the Apple webpage that updates will be installed automatically if you don't install them manually, but you must have everything activated on System Preferences > Software Update. I think that only applies to security updates, so if you tick "Install system data files and security updates", your computer will install them without doing anything manually
Ahh, ok, thanks, that's re-assuring; that means I haven't missed anything. I don't care to have any downloads/installs in the background - I prefer to decide what and when it gets installed.
I prefer to turn all options on and forget about installing updates (although I end up installing them when Apple just releases updates!)

The problem is that you'll have to install the updates that Software Update found before unmarking that option. After installing them, Software Update won't search updates, so you'll install updates whenever you want

AFAIK, that's wrong. You can disable all options w/o installing any available updates.😉
But I was referring that the pop-up will still show in Notification Center after disable those options. Am I wrong?
That I wouldn't know since I've permanently disabled NC, finding it totally intrusive and useless. I was only talking about having to install updates before disabling the Software Update settings.
Missing from that article is the one that allows disabling NC permanently.
Unfortunately, none of the proposed solutions address the problem of wanting to:
a) use notification center for things you care about (e.g. reminders you set)
b) NOT be bothered by idiotic notifications that there is a new version of some random app that has just been updated to include new advertisements/in-app purchases/facebook integration/etc..
